Mountie Baseball drops SCC doubleheader at Long Beach

(Long Beach, CA) Mt. San Antonio College (4-11, 0-4) and Long Beach City College (7-10, 3-0) met in a South Coast Conference doubleheader on Saturday, March 4, that the host Vikings swept by the scores of 3-1 and 9-3.

Long Beach scored all the runs it needed by the end of the third inning as the Mounties scored their only run in the top of the fourth.

Top hitters for Mt. SAC included Travis Hobbersiefken (2-4, R, 2B), Michael Flores (1-3), and Gibby Morales (1-4, RBI).

Starter Ray Northey (2-2) got the loss for the Mounties, pitching four innings, allowing three runs (all earned), and striking out five.

Long Beach 9 Mt. SAC 3

Trailing 1-0 through three innings, Mt. SAC took the lead with three runs in the top of the fourth, only to see the Vikings responded with six runs in the bottom of the same inning. Long Beach tacked on two more in the seventh and the Mounties rallied with three in the top of the ninth to conclude the game's scoring.

Morales (1-3, R) and Joey Rossetti (1-4, 2 RBI, 2B) accounted for Mt. SAC's only hits.

Starting pitcher Alec Beck (0-1) got the loss, throwing 3.1 innings, allowing six runs (two earned), while striking out four.


Mt. SAC will take a break from SCC play with the first of a three-game non-conference series against Santa Barbara City College (11-4) on Tuesday, March 7, at 2 p.m. in Santa Barbara. Between Games 1 and 2, the Mounties will squeeze in an SCC rain-makeup game at Cerritos College (5-9, 1-2) on Wednesday, March 8, at 2 p.m. Games 2 and 3 of the Santa Barbara series will take place at home on Thursday and Friday, March 9 and 10, at 2 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
