(Walnut, CA) The world renown Mt. SAC Relays kicks off this weekend with the 30th Annual LA84 Foundation Mt. SAC Relays Youth Days Track and Field Meet. This years theme is "Fun and Friendship Through Sport." Over 6,000 elementary and middle school children are expected to compete this Friday (March 20th) and Saturday (March 21st) in Historic Hilmer Lodge Stadium, on the campus of Mt. San Antonio College (Mt. SAC) in Walnut, CA. Friday's event will feature the Middle School Division, while Saturday's event will feature the Elementary School Division.
This incredible program which exposes the youth of Southern California to the Olympic Sport of Track and Field, is the legacy of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. Mt. San Antonio College is the first and longest grantee of the LA84 Foundation. The partnership between Mt. SAC and the LA84 Foundation began in 1985, spanning 30 years and reaching over 400,000 participants.
As part of the LA84 Foundation Mt. SAC Relays Youth Days Program, over 4,200 boys and girls in grades 3 through 8 experienced free instructional programs in the form of assemblies at their schools, or “learn-by-trying field trips,” at Mt. San Antonio College.
The 2015 event will mark the last Mt. SAC Relays held in Historic Hilmer Lodge Stadium. This fall, the stadium and surrounding facilities are scheduled for a complete renovation. The new "state-of-the-art" Hilmer Lodge Stadium and facilities are scheduled to reopen in 2017, with the goal of bidding for and securing the 2020 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials.
