Mt. SAC Woman Water Polo defeats El Camino 12-2 in SCC

(Torrance, CA) The Mt. SAC Women's Water Polo team wrapped up the regular season with a 12-2 South Coast Conference win over host El Camino on Wednesday, October 25. With the win, the Mounties (12-10, 5-1) finished second in the conference behind champion Long Beach City College.

The SCC Championships begin on Thursday, November 2 at LBCC.

Leading the way for the Mounties was sophomore driver Jayde Gutierrez with a game-high four goals. Gianna Gomez and Shauna Mercado scored two goals each. Mercado led the team in steals with five, while Gomez added four.

Mt. SAC scored six goals in the first half, while the defense held the Warriors to a lone goal for the 6-1 lead. The Mounties duplicated the second half with the same six goals and again held El Camino to one goal.

Gutierrez, who is second on the team in goals scored with 48, opened the game with three consecutive goals in the first period in a span of just over two minutes to give the Mounties a 3-0 lead.

Freshman attackers Viviana Gill and Gomez each scored a goal to give Mt. SAC a 5-0 lead heading into the second period.

The teams traded goals in the second period, and the Mounties scored six of the next seven goals in the second half.
