Mt. SAC Women’s Water Polo Faces Tough Competition in Ventura Tournament

(Ventura, CA) It was a challenging and tough weekend for the Mt. SAC Women's Water Polo Team, who went 0 for 4 in last weekend's Ventura College Tournament (Oct. 6, 7).  Mt. SAC (8-8) suffered losses to San Diego Mesa (14-11) and Merced (13-9) on Friday, and Fullerton (14-8) and No. 8 Ventura (10-6), on Saturday.  Sophomore Elizabeth Chong led the Mounties with 15 goals in the tournament, while Gianna Gomez and Jayde Gutierrez added eight and seven goals, respectively.

Game No. 1, Fri. Oct. 6
SD Mesa 14, Mt. SAC 11

Chong, who has scored 39 goals for the Mounties this season, led with five goals against the Olympians, while overall team goal leader Gomez (40 goals) and Gutierrez (43 goals) had three each. Sophomore goalie Kelly Jackson had 11 saves.

It was a closely contested match for the first two periods, with Mesa holding a one-goal, 3-2 lead in the first, and the Mounties leading the second and third periods. Leading the way in those two periods was Gutierrez with three goals, while Chong had two, and Gomez had one. Three of the four Mountie goals in the period were scored by Gutierrez, giving them a 6-4 lead. Mt. SAC held on to an 8-7 lead heading into the final period, but Mesa scored six consecutive goals to start the period and took a commanding 13-8 lead with 2:11 left in the game. The Mounties managed to score three of the last four goals, but it wasn't enough.

Game No. 2, Sat. Oct. 7
Merced 13, Mt. SAC 9

Gomez led with four goals, and Gutierrez added two for the Mounties. Individual goals were scored by Janel Ramirez, Shauna Mercado, and Chong. Chong opened the game with a goal, but Merced scored five consecutive goals before Gutierrez scored in the last minute of the period, making the score 5-2. Gomez led with two goals in the second, as the Mounties once again trailed by only two, 7-5, at the half. Merced outscored the Mounties, 6-4, in the second half to secure a 13-9 victory. Gomez had two of the final three Mt. SAC goals late in the fourth period.

Game No. 3, Sat. Oct. 7
Fullerton 14, Mt. SAC 8

Chong led with three goals in the game, along with two by Gutierrez and Gomez, and a single goal by Mercado. The Mounties opened the game with three consecutive goals by Chong for a 3-1 first-period lead. The Hornets outscored the Mounties 8-1 in the second period, opening up a significant 9-4 lead. Despite a 5-4 advantage for Fullerton in the second half, the Mounties lost by six goals. Jackson once again recorded 11 saves in the game.

Game No. 4, Sat. Oct. 7
Ventura 10, Mt. SAC 6

Chong again led with three goals for the Mounties, followed by Morgan Hove (2) and Gomez (1). With only single goals in the first three periods, the Mounties trailed 9-3 and couldn't recover. Hove scored two of the final three Mountie goals in the last period. Jackson recorded 12 saves for Mt. SAC.
