Volleyball Loses in Five Sets, 3-2, to PCC

(Pasadena, CA) In a marathon two-hour match, the Mt. SAC Women's Volleyball Team was edged by the host Pasadena City College Lancers, 3-2, Wednesday (Oct. 23) in South Coast Conference action.

PCC, which improved to 16-4 overall and 7-2 (3rd place) in conference, won in five sets, 24-26, 25-21, 25-11, 23-25, 15-12. Mt. SAC dropped to 6-14, 3-6.

Juliana Gomez (6 Digs, 1 Service Ace) led the Mounties with nine kills and Camille Boone had eight kills. Jocelyn Portillo (8 Digs) and Jessica Morse added seven and six kills, respectively. Janderi Ceja (2 Digs) had a team-high 18 assists, Azriel White (4 Digs) had 15 assists and Ashly Velazquez had 15 digs.

With the match tied at two sets apiece and the Mounties trailing, 14-9 in the fifth and final set, Barnes (7 Kills, 15 Digs) had a kill, followed by two errors by the Lancers for the slim, 14-12 lead.

After a Lancers time out, PCC kill-leader Nalani Young ended the match with her 19th slam for the win. 

In the opening set, the Mounties led, 21-14, but the Lancers came all the way back to tie it, 24-24. Barnes had a kill and a block at the net by Boone and Gomez ended the set for the 1-0 lead. 

PCC came back with two wins to lead, 2-1 in the match, before the Mounties evened things up at two sets each, after Gomez had a kill to end the fourth set, 25-23.

The Mounties will host El Camino Friday (Oct. 25) in a SCC match.
