Mt. SAC Women finish second in SCC Championships

(Monterey Park, CA) The winning streak of four South Coast Conference Championships in a row came to an end, as the Mt. SAC Women's Swim team finished second to Long Beach City College on Saturday (April 23) at East Los Angeles College.

The Mounties (663 Points), which won from 2016 through 2019, fell to the Vikings (725) in the finals of the SCC Championships. No championships were held in 2020 and '21 due to the pandemic.

Rounding out the top five placers was No. 3. Cerritos (461), No. 4 El Camino (331) and No. 5 Rio Hondo (249).

The Mounties won six events, three of which were individual titles.

Sophomore Melissa Chavez won both the 100 and 200 Breaststroke and was a member of the 200 and 400 Medley Relay first-place teams.

The Mounties also won the 800 Freestyle Relay title (Isabell Ortega, Parker Damaske, Laila Topinio, Lexis Brattain).

Topinio won the third individual title for the Mounties in the 1,650 Freestyle event.

Mt. SAC's sophomore diver Journey Barreto was chosen as the SCC's Diver of the Year with her victories in the 1 and 3-Meter Diving events.

The final event of the season is the CCCAA State Championships, beginning Thursday, May 5 through Saturday, May 7 at ELAC.
