(Torrance, CA) The first section of Diving has finished in the South Coast Conference and CCCAA Southern California finals, and Mt. SAC sophomore Journey Barreto has qualified for the state in both the 1 Meter and 3 Meter events held at El Camino College on Friday and Saturday (April 15, 16).

The next diving competition, which is the CCCAA State Championships, will take place at East Los Angeles College, May 5-7.

With the state qualification for Barreto, she also becomes conference champion, and her points earned will be added to the team score at the upcoming championships held at ELAC Thursday through Saturday (April 21-23).

Barreto, in her six dives, finished eighth overall among 24 divers (12 schools) in the 1 M event and sixth overall among 13 divers (7 schools) in the 3 M competition.

Placing 16th overall in the 1 Meter was freshman Shelby Hanss. She placed third in the conference for the Mounties in her six dives.

In the competition, each dive has a degree of difficulty, with each judge determining points based on a 1-10 scale. A high and low score is then thrown out for the final score.

With the scores, Mt. SAC will add those points from both divers to the SCC team Swimming Championships.

"We are obviously very excited for Journey (Barreto), as conference champion and qualifying for state championships on both boards," Mt. SAC Swimming coach Marc Ruh said. "The girls will come into the conference championships with (approximately) 50 points ahead of Long Beach City College. That is a very big boost for the team.
