Mt. SAC Women's Basketball defeats host Sequoias, 72-62, for third place in Gilcrest Tourney

(Visalia, CA) The Mt. SAC Women's Basketball team, with a big second-half comeback, defeated host College of the Sequoias, 72-62, for third place in the 46th Annual Gilcrest Tournament on Saturday, December 2.

With the win, the 3C2A State No. 3 Mounties improved to 5-2 overall.

Mt. SAC opened the Tournament with a 72-55 win over Chabot and lost to State No. 5 San Joaquin Delta, 67-59, in the semifinals.

The high-profile tournament featured three of the state's top-five ranked teams - No. 2 Butte (tournament champion), Mt. SAC (No. 3), and San Joaquin Delta (No. 5). All three reached the elite eight of the state tournament last season.

In the opener against Chabot, sophomore guard Dailani Richardson led with 22 points in the win (see game recap on Nov. 30).

Semifinal

San Joaquin Delta 67, Mt. SAC 59

Richardson (6-17 FGM- A, 2-6 3PM-A) and freshman forward Daisia Mitchell (6-17 FGM-A, 2-4 FTM-A, 10 RB, 6 Stls.) led with 14 points each, while sophomore guard Carley Bolden (4-10 FGM-A, 3-4 FTM-A, 3 Asst., 1 Stl.) added 11 points.

Freshman forward Isabella Roderick (2-3 FGM-A) came off the bench and had a game-high 11 rebounds.

The Mounties trailed after the first quarter, 13-9, but outscored Delta, 28-15 in the second to trail, 28-27 at the half.

The six-point third quarter (18-12) advantage by San Joaquin put the Mounties down, 46-39, entering the final quarter.

Mitchell and Bilden led with six points each in the fourth quarter, but the Mustangs held on for the eight-point victory.

Mt. SAC 72, Sequoias 62

Mt. SAC sophomore guard Frances Potts (8-16 FGM-A, 3 RB) scored a game-high 18 points, while Mitchell (5-15 FGM-A, 4-6 FTM-A, 3 Stls.) added 14 points and led with 11 rebounds.

Richardson (10-11 FTM-A) had 13 points and freshman forward Alana Diaz (2-4 FGM-A, 5-6 FTM-A, 5 RB, 1 Blk.) scored nine.

Trailing 35-25 at the half, the Mounties had their biggest second-half comeback of the season, outscoring the Giants, 47-27, for the 10-point win.

Potts and Mitchell led the Mounties in the second half with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

Butte, which the Mounties defeated earlier in the season in the championship of the Mt. SAC Tip-off Classic, won the Gilcrest Tournament with a 48-42 victory over San Joaquin Delta.

Mt. SAC heads to its Third tourney of the season this coming Thursday (Dec. 7-9) at L A. Valley College against Cypress.
