Mt. SAC Wins Gene Victor Memorial Classic Behind MVP Hopkins; Defeats Victor Valley, 91-75

(Walnut, CA) Another blowout victory by the Mt. SAC Men's Basketball team led the Mounties to the Championship of the 14th Annual Gene Victor Classic on Saturday afternoon, November 11. Mt. SAC, which improved to 3-0, defeated Victor Valley with a 91-75 win in the four-team tourney. In the consolation game prior to the championship, Glendale defeated Grossmont, 77-73. The Mounties also won big in the opening game of the classic with a 23-point victory over Glendale, 85-62.

In the championship game, sophomore guard Nick Hopkins (5-7 FGM-A, 8-11 FTM-A, 11 RB, 2 A, 1 Stl.) led the team with 18 points. Hopkins, in the two games, averaged 20-points and was named the tournament Most Valuable Player. Four other Mounties scored in double figures; CJ Fisher, 16 Pts., Jerimiyah Smith, 12 Pts., Ernest Love, 11 Pts., and Mikah Gardner, 11 Pts.

In a close first half, Hopkins led Mt. SAC with 12 points as the Mounties held a 46-40 lead. The second half, however, was a different story as the Mounties outscored the Rams, 35-25. The excitement level among the Mountie fans was heightened with numerous dunks during a 13-4 run, giving the Mounties a 59-44 lead. Gardner led with two thundering dunks in the run. Mt. SAC will defend its title in the Pasadena City College Skip Robinson Tournament on Thursday (Nov. 16) against L.A. Pierce.
