Mounties Baseball Back on the Winning Trail.

Mounties Baseball Back on the Winning Trail.

(Walnut, CA) After a pair of excruciating losses on the road the Mounties bounce back with 3 victories. The Mounties traveled to Woodland Hills to face Pierce College on Thursday, February 5. Ethan Etchebarren took the mound for the Mounties and was masterful through his 6 innings of work, allowing only 1 run on 3 hits while striking out 7. The Mounties scored 5 runs in the top of the 8th to open up a seemingly insurmountable 11-1 lead. The offense was lead by Dustin Frailey's 4 hits, 3  runs scored, and 2 runs batted in. Edgar Cabral chipped in with 4 runs batted in. In the bottom of the 8th, though, the Mounties started to unravel by allowing 6 unearned runs and allowing Pierce to cut the Mountie lead to 11-7. After a scoreless top of the 9th, the Mounties needed 3 more outs to preserve the victory. Those 3 outs would never come. After closing the lead to 11-10, Pierce had runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs. A seemingly harmless ground ball was mishandled and Pierce College walked away with a 12-11 walk-off victory.

The Mounties then traveled to Fullerton College for a Saturday afternoon game on February 7. This game was a back and forth affair. The Mounties struck first in the top of the 3rd inning. Michael Starns protected the 1-0 lead until the bottom of the 5th, when Fullerton plated a run to tie the score. Starns was solid, pitching 5 innings and only allowing the single run. The Mounties would take a two run lead in the top of the 7th  on a triple that drove in 2 runs by Dustin Frailey. Fullerton closed to 3-2 in the bottom of the 7th. In the top of the 8th, an RBI single by Esteban Ortega drove in Travis Santiago to increase the lead to 4-2. Fullerton struck with 3 unearned runs in the bottom of the 8th to claim their first lead of the game at 5-4. The Mounties battled to tie the game in the top of the 9th on a sacrifice fly by Nate Alam. After holding Fullerton in the 9th, the game was headed for extra innings. The Mounties were held scoreless in the top of the 10th. Fullerton plated a run in the bottom of the 10th to hand the Mounties their second straight walk-off defeat.

For the 3rd straight game, the Mounties were on the bus. This time, the Mounties were headed to Mt. San Jacinto for an afternoon game on February 10th. The Mounties were in control of this game from start to finish as they scored one run in the 1st, 3 runs in the 2nd, and one run in the 4th and 5th. Mt. San Jacinto could only manage 1 run through the first 5 innings and the Mounties lead was 6-1. The Mounties then opened the game up with 3 runs in the 6th and lead 9-1. The final score was 10-2, and the Mounties were back on the winning trail. Ethan Etchebarren was the winning pitcher as he tossed 6 innings and allowed only one run on 4 hits. Etchebarren was followed to the mound by Paul Barraza and Andrew Matus for the victory. The offense was lead by Edgar Cabral's 4 hits and 2 RBI's. Dustin Frailey and Travis Santiago each had 3 hits, with Frailey scoring 4 runs, and Santiago driving in 5 runs.

Ventura College was next up for the Mounties. This time it was Ventura that was on the bus, visiting Mazmanian Field for a Thursday night game. Again, the Mounties jumped out in front early, with 3 runs in the 1st and one run in the 2nd. Michael Starns would make that lead hold up by allowing only 3 earned runs in his 6 innings of work. Jonathan Chapman, Daniel Perez, and Andrew Matus each threw scoreless relief and the Mounties walk away with a 7-4 victory. Kevin Romo was one of the offensive leader in this game with 2 hits and 2 RBI's. Travis Santiago added 2 hits and Johnny Juarez added 2 RBI's.

The next opponent, Riverside College, would bring their 10-0 record to Mazmanian Field for a Tuesday night game on February 17. Ethan Etchebarren took the mound for the Mounties. After trailing 2-0 in the 3rd, the Mounties scored 3 in the bottom of the 3rd for a 3-2 lead. Riverside answered with 2 in the top of the 4th to regain the lead. The Mounties scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 4th to take the lead for good. The inning was highlighted by Edgar Cabral's towering home run, the Mounties' first home run of the season. On a day that Etchebarren didn't have his best stuff, he battled for 5 innings to keep the Mounties in the game and hand the ball to Josh Avila. Avila threw 3 scoreless innings and Andrew Matus threw a scoreless 9th to finish off the 13-4 Mountie victory. There were several offensive heroes on this night, led by Dustin Frailey, Travis Santiago, Edgar Cabral, and Esteban Ortega, who all had 2 hits. Santiago had 4 RBI's, Cabral had 3 RBI's, and Frailey, Ortega, and Johnny Juarez had 2 RBI's each. Frailey also contributed 3 runs scored, 4 stolen bases, and an outfield assist.

The Mounties (6-2) travel to Rio Hondo (8-1) for a Wednesday afternoon game (2 PM) on February 18, looking to extendtheir winning streak to 4 games.
