New Long Beach City College softball head coach Megan Martinez earned her first South Coast Conference win for the Vikings, and it was a big one. Behind a complete-game shutout by sophomore Brooke Loard (Millikan HS), LBCC upset No. 11 state-ranked and previously unbeaten Mt. San Antonio College by a final score of 4-0 in Walnut on Tuesday.

Loard scattered five hits over seven innings and struck out six batters. She allowed just one Mt. SAC runner to reach third base and stranded five runners for the game.

The Long Beach defense had been shaky at the start of the season but it was the Mounties' miscues that would give the game to the Vikings. LBCC scored all four runs off of Mt. SAC errors. LBCC scored twice in the first and single runs in the fourth and fifth.

LBCC totaled seven hits in the game, getting two from Daisy Velasquez (Bellflower HS). Brianna Alvarez (Montebello HS), Tristin Zazueta (Paramount HS), Andrea Barba (Cypress HS), and Velasquez all scored runs for the Vikings.

The win improved Long Beach to 5-5 overall and 1-0 in SCC play while Mt. SAC fell to 7-1 and 0-1 in conference.

The Vikings return to action on Thursday (Feb. 18) at 3 p.m. when they travel to Cerritos College for a SCC game.
