(Walnut, CA) The Mt. SAC Women's Volleyball team, which has won seven of its last 10 matches, including three in a row, swept visiting Southwestern College (Chula Vista), 3-0, Friday (October 1).
Leading the way for Mt. SAC (9-4, 3-2) were Riley DeGroot (7 Digs, 2 Service aces) and Allison Whiteman (5 D) with 15 (.424 K%) and 14 (.321 K%) kills, respectively.
"I think we can all be unstoppable if we work together as a team," Whiteman said. "It's really important that we're all on the same page together and that's what we work on in practice.
"Just competing and playing hard and having a good mindset throughout the game is huge for us."
A phenomenal match by setter Ally Euston resulted in 33 assists and a season-high 17 digs.
Libero Riannel Arevalo came through with 20 digs in the match, her second-highest of the season to date.
"Just continuing to stick to the game plan and doing what works for us on the court is important," Mt. SAC Women's Volleyball coach Samantha Neely said. "We are still growing as a team, with our freshmen. With that, I think we have the capability to be playing at a really high level."
In the opening set, the Mounties had a big early lead, 12-4, in part by DeGroot, as she was serving for six consecutive points.
However, the Jaguars (3-8) came back with a seven-point run to trail by two, 12-10.
It was close to the end, but JJ Quarrels (9 Kills) had a big kill to put the Mounties at game point, 24-21. The Mounties put the game away from there for the 1-0 set lead.
In the second set, the Mounties got off to a hot start on the jaguars, leading, 10-5. That was led by a flurry of kills as DeGroot and Whiteman had four in that stretch.
Southwestern wouldn't go away, as they only trailed by three, 18-15, but Whiteman put the game away and ended the set with a kill for the 2-0 lead.
"Allison is one of those players that you don't always notice right away, just because she is so consistent," Neely said. "She is always there to get the kills, she is always there to pick up the ball and she doesn't make a whole lot of mistakes. She's a really consistent presence on the court."
The third set was controlled by the Mounties and the tandem of DeGroot and Whiteman, as they had six kills apiece.
The Mounties won going away with a 10-point margin for the 25-15 win and the sweep in three sets.
Mt. SAC will host Rio Hondo in an SCC match Wednesday (October 6).
