Mounties cruise to season-opening win over MiraCosta with balanced scoring attack

(Oceanside, CA) Following a season off the field due to COVID, the Mt. SAC Men's Soccer Team opened its 2021 season with a 5-1 victory over MiraCosta (0-1) in Oceanside on Friday.

Each of the Mounties' goals came from different players: Paul Iniguez in the 22nd minute (assist Jason Garcia), Garcia in the 42nd minute (Travis Piceno assist), Andrew Vazquez in the 54th minute (Thomas Chandler assist), Fabian Hernandez in the 58th minute (Piceno assist), and Sean Romo in the 87th minute (Edward Castro assist).

The lone Spartan goal came in the second half to pull the hosts to within one, 2-1, in the 47th minute.

Mountie goalkeepers Jacob Cardenas (70 minutes, five saves) and Ian Johanson (20 minutes, two saves) combined to hold MiraCosta to a single goal.

Mt. SAC (1-0) returns to action on Friday, September 3, in the opening match of the 2021 Nike/Azteca/Mt. SAC Tournament against West Valley (0-0) at 8 p.m.
