Walnut, Calif. – With four regular season games remaining, the Mt. SAC Baseball team locked up the South Coast Conference Championship in convincing fashion, defeating Pasadena City College 11-4 on Thursday, April 17. The win improves the Mounties' record to an impressive 31-5 overall and 18-2 in conference play. Pasadena drops to 19-14 overall and 10-10 in the SCC.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Mounties wasted no time getting on the board, as Ty Thomas delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the first to bring in Bryan Bradshaw for a 1-0 lead. Pasadena quickly responded with a solo home run by Evan Nahra in the top of the second to even the score.
Thomas struck again in the third, giving Mt. SAC a 2-1 lead with another RBI single. In the fourth, the Mounties capitalized on a Pasadena error, with Cole Nachreiner reaching base and Miguel Perez scoring. Diego Ortiz added another run on a groundout from Jackson Giacone, and Bradshaw capped the inning with an RBI single to give Mt. SAC a 5-1 advantage.
Pasadena trimmed the lead in the fifth, scoring on a fielder's choice that brought Isaac Ton home, making it 5-2.
Mt. SAC pulled away in the sixth. Landon White grounded out to shortstop, allowing Nachreiner to score, followed by a clutch three-RBI double from Tyler Stull, pushing the lead to 9-2.
The Lancers kept fighting, scoring one in the seventh on a Joaquin Salcedo single and another in the eighth via a solo shot from Devon Eskridge, closing the gap to 9-4.
But the Mounties answered right back in the bottom of the eighth. White scored on a catcher's error, and Thomas crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Stull, sealing the 11-4 win.
Hudson Castillo delivered a solid outing, pitching 6.2 innings, allowing just two earned runs, six hits, and striking out four. Joey Peralta came on in relief, adding two strikeouts to close out the game.
