"Catching Up" With Former Mountie Softball Star Quinn DeAvila

Catching Up With Quinn DeAvila Graphic

(Walnut, CA) The Mt. SAC Sports Information Office “Catches Up” with former Mountie Shortstop Quinn De Avila about her current situation as a student-athlete at Texas A&M University Corpus Christi, an NCAA Division 1 program in the Southland Conference.  De Avila, out of South Hills High School, was the team leader of last year’s Mountie Softball Program and a member of the 2019 California Community College Athletic Association State Championship team.  She recently transferred on scholarship and will continue to her education and softball career with the Islanders.

Due to the current Covid situation, her sophomore season with the Mounties was cut short, but that did not stop De Avila from racking up some impressive numbers including at .458 batting average, .509 on base percentage, .771 slugging percentage (1.000 in conference), along with 16 RBI’s, 17 runs, 3 homeruns and 2 stolen bases.  She started in all 19 games for the Mounties, who finished with a very impressive, 19-1, overall record which was better than the 2019 state championship team, at the same point of the season.

In the classroom, De Avila shined and was named to the 3CFCA All-State Academic Softball Team.  She also earned All-South Coast Conference Second Team Honors in 2019.

De Avila recently visited (07/19/21) the Mt. SAC Sports Information Office and sat down to "Catch Up" with the Mountie Family.

INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT

Quinn, thanks for joining us today.

Tell us a little about Texas A&M Corpus Christi?

Texas A&M Corpus Christi is a small university located in a very small community in South Texas.  With CoVid, I haven’t been able to venture out much but, the people there are very friendly.

How has your life changed moving so far away from Mt. SAC and your hometown area?

When I first committed to Texas A&M Corpus Christi, I had less than a week to move there.  It was a stressful time, but it was a great decision.  I will always cherish my memories at Mt. SAC, but I am grateful for this opportunity to compete at the division one level.

What do think last year’s Mt. SAC Softball Team could have accomplished if the season had not been cut short due to the Covid situation?

I feel like the 2019-2020 team was extremely talented with great chemistry.  It was something I had never experienced to that degree.  With the leadership and cohesion we had, I felt we would have won the state championship, with most of our team earning all-american status.  Our entire team could come up clutch in any situation.  It was a real selfless team who sacrificed for the team rather than themselves individually.  I loved every minute of my time at Mt. SAC and with the team.

What were some of your most memorable experiences at Mt. SAC and what do you miss the most about being a Mountie?

My most memorable experience at Mt. SAC was when we captured the state championships in 2019.  In the state championship tournament, I hit a solo homerun to give us the lead against Sacramento City College to give us the lead and win 2-1.  That kept us in the winners bracket, but it was memorable to me because I was able to contribute to the win.

Another memorable experience of my time at Mt. SAC was the weight lifting session and practices.  I always looked forward to practices because our team was so competitive, even during practices.

The thing I miss most about being a Mountie is the family atmosphere and the relationships I made at Mt. SAC.  Those relationships have continued even as an Alumni living far away in Texas.   I will never forget the time when the entire football team came to our game, packing our stadium and cheering us on!

Mt. SAC will always be a special place for myself and the student-athletes I attended with.

With Covid continuing on, what is the current situation with your university and the softball team?

Currently, I am working out on my own.  At the university, we are socially distancing and doing whatever it takes to keep everyone safe.  We hope to have some type of normal next season.
