(Walnut, CA) Hilmer Lodge Stadium celebrates its 70th anniversary! The stadium, built at a cost of $68,078, was dedicated on October 8th, 1948, by the Student Body President George Martin, Mt. SAC Trustees Fred L. Harmsen, A.L. Hickson, Herbert G. Langdon, A.T. Richardson and Verne R. Ross, College President George Bell and future U.S. President, then U.S. Representative, Richard M. Nixon.
The stadium is currently undergoing a complete renovation that is anticipated for completion in late 2019.
Through the years, the historic stadium has hosted millions of guests at concerts, sporting events, graduation and special events. Hilmer Lodge Stadium is the home of the world famous Mt. SAC Relays and the renown Mt. SAC Cross Country Invitational, both of which hold the titles of world's largest competition in their respective sports. The stadium has a long and storied history that includes 20 world records in Track & Field, movie/television appearances and some incredible historic moments including the 1968 U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials and the "Greatest Day in Track & Field" where 6 world records were set in one evening.
The stadium is named after Mt. SAC's first Cross Country/Track & Field Coach, Hilmer Lodge, who also founded the Mt. SAC Relays and Cross Country Invitational. For nearly three decades, Lodge was an influential figure in U.S. Track and Field / Cross Country at the highest levels, including internationally as an official of the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF). Lodge led a number of national teams and was a well respected coach among his peers that included coaching legends Bill Bowerman, Payton Jordan, Ducky Drake and Jess Mortensen.
