(Sacramento, CA) Mt. SAC Men's Cross Country Runner, Manuel Fernandez, was named the October California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) State Student-Ahtlete of the Month.   The award is presented by the California Community College Sports Information Association and is awarded monthly to the state's top male and female student-athlete performer for that month.

Fernandez was a major reason why the Mt. SAC Men’s Cross Country Team was undefeated in community college competition during the month of October. The sophomore out of Bassett High School (La Puente, CA) finished the regular season with four consecutive individual championships. Individually, he was undefeated (in October), capturing the Tour de Cuesta, Mt. SAC Cross Country Invitational and the South Coast Conference Championship individual titles. On the last day of September, Fernandez won his first race of the season, capturing the Willamette Invitational, in Salem (OR). He ran the eight-kilometer course in 24:33, faster than over 390 runners, from 38 teams, including 30 four-year universities.

Fernandez captured the South Coast Conference Individual Championship and was named the 2017 South Coast Conference Cross Country Athlete of the Year.  He continued his winning streak into the month of November, capturing the Southern California and CCCAA State Individual Titles as well as leading the Mounties to team championships in both events.

Fernandez becomes the 12th Mt. SAC Student-Athlete to capture this prestigious honor.
