Mt. SAC Women’s Cross Country Team Set to Defend CCCAA State Title

(Walnut, CA) The Mt. SAC Women's Cross Country Team, coming off its 2017 CCCAA State Championship, is looking to have another successful season this year. 

The Mounties open up the year at Cal State University Fullerton in the Mark Covert Classic at Carbon Canyon Regional Park on Saturday September 1. This will be the first of seven invitationals for the team this season.

The team title last season was the ninth overall for the Mounties and second in the last four years. Mt. SAC dominated last season as it was ranked No. 1 in the state on two of the four polls. and in the South in five of the six. In the exciting championship race held in Fresno's Woodward Park, the Mounties defeated Cuyamaca College by two points.

"The Mt. SAC Women's Cross Country Team is coming off of a spectacular season, where they captured the 2017 state championship, " Mt. SAC Cross Country coach Giovanni Lanaro said.

"Coming back to us from that state championship team is Rebecca Ruiz and Montserath Celis. We have also added a talented recruiting class that will fill the void from the departure of last year's sophomores. We are very excited and looking forward to the start of the season. "

The Mounties have nine freshmen and seven sophomores on this years team.

Included in the seven invitationals this year is the 71st Annual Brooks Mt. SAC Cross Country Invitational on October 12, 19-20. The invitational is the world's largest cross country event with three divisions – Community College, High school and Elementary/Middle Schools.
