Women Win Fifth Straight Game, Defeat Chaffey, 16-7; Head to Ventura Tourney

(WALNUT) Heading into the Ventura College Tournament this weekend, the Mountie women are on a roll, winning their fifth consecutive game and ninth out of their last eleven.

The latest win came against Chaffey College, 16-7, in a South Coast Conference game, the last home regular season game, Wednesday afternoon at Mt. SAC's Marie T. Mills Aquatic Center.

With the victory the Mounties upped their record to 10-4 overall and a perfect 6-0 in conference to sit atop the standings, tied with Cerritos College.

At the Ventura tourney they will play two games on Friday: (American River College, 2pm) and host Ventura at 6:20 pm.

On Saturday the Mounties will play Fullerton at 10:10 am and Cypress College at 12:30.

In the Chaffey game, freshman 2-meter player Kayla De Herrera led all scorers with five goals and sophomore attacker Beth Keane added three. Keane also had two steals and an assist.

Freshman 2-meter player Marina Valenzuela and freshman defender Alexis Aguirre each scored two goals. Aguirre also had four assists and six goals.

"It feels good (win) and I like that we're working hard," De Herrera said. "We're trying to set the pace and tempo for the whole game."

Mt. SAC freshman goalie Shelby Garcia went three periods and picked up the win, saving six of ten shots.

Mt. SAC took a 5-1 lead in the first period on a pair of goals by De Herrera and Keane and a solo goal by freshman attacker Clare Rowland.

After the Mounties built up an 8-3 lead at the half, they came out strong in the third period, scoring four consecutive goals to blow open the score, 12-4, by De Herrera (2), and one each by freshman attackers Hannah Rueter and Ridlee Dunlap.

The Mt. SAC defense held the Panthers scoreless for six minutes between the first and second periods and also for almost the entire third period before a late goal.

The Mounties will play at Cerritos College (12-5, 5-0) next Wednesday with first place on the line.
