Mounties Power Past Grossmont and Moorpark in Mt. SAC Tri-Tournament

Walnut, Calif. – In a show of dominance at their home tournament, the Mt. SAC Women's Volleyball Team defeated Grossmont and Moorpark on Friday, September 5, with with identical 3-1 victories.

GAME 1:

The Mounties opened the day with a competitive four-set win over the Grossmont Griffins. After taking the first set 25-17, Mt. SAC dropped a close second set 25-23. They bounced back with two strong finishes, winning the third and fourth sets 25-22 and 25-14.

Despite the victory, the match was evenly contested statistically. Mt. SAC posted a .168 hitting percentage with 50 kills on 143 attempts, while Grossmont hit .144 with 39 kills on 125 swings. The Mounties edged out the Griffins in digs, 61 to 57. However, Grossmont dominated at the net, totaling 18 block assists and 4 solo blocks compared to Mt. SAC's 6 block assists and 2 solo blocks.

On offense, Sydney Valentine and Emma Carson each tallied 16 kills, while also contributing 13 and 11 digs, respectively. Running a 5-1 offense, Morgan Wilson continued her strong form as setter, dishing out 45 assists. Defensively, Mayah Tiscareno anchored the back row with 18 digs.

GAME 2:

In the second matchup of the day, the Mounties again took control early with a 25-15 first set win. Moorpark responded with a narrow 27-25 second set victory, but Mt. SAC closed out the match convincingly with 25-18 and 25-13 wins in the final two sets.

Longer rallies led to bigger numbers across the board. The Mounties improved their hitting slightly with a .182 percentage on 52 kills from 192 attempts, while Moorpark struggled with efficiency, managing just a .077 percentage on 44 kills from 208 attempts. The defensive battle was fierce, with Mt. SAC recording 118 digs to Moorpark's 110. Mt. SAC was once again edged out at the net, with the Raiders tallying 11 total blocks to the Mounties' 6.

Morgan Wilson put on a stellar all-around performance with 44 assists, 19 digs, 5 aces, and 3 kills. Emma Carson led the offense again with 17 kills, while also contributing 24 digs on defense. Sydney Valentine chipped in 11 kills and 17 digs, while Yaretzi Silva added 10 kills. Mayah Tiscareno was dominant on defense, racking up a match-high 33 digs.

Mt. SAC is set to host undefeated Orange Coast College on Wednesday, September 10, at 6:00 PM. Orange Coast currently leads the Orange Empire Conference with a 6-0 record. Come out and support the Mounties as they look to hand OCC their first loss of the season. Good luck, ladies!
