Mt. SAC Volleyball Sweeps Cerritos, 3-0

(Walnut, CA) Jessica Morse and Camille Boone led the Mounties with 14 and 11 kills, respectively, in a 3-0 sweep Wednesday (Oct. 9) over visiting Cerritos College in a South Coast Conference match.

"I played a different position (Wednesday) and we mixed up the offense a little," Boone said. "I think this lineup that we have will help with the two big blockers on the right."

Mt. SAC, which improved to 5-11 overall and 2-3 in conference, won by scores of 25-20, 25-16, 25-16.

"We've been struggling to find a lineup that clicks and that was just a breath of fresh air (Wednesday)," Mt. SAC Women's Volleyball Coach Ali Carey-Oliver said. "To see them working so hard for each other was great.

"We haven't been able to get Camille (Boone) more involved because our passing has been hit and miss. We (coaches) sat down and wanted Camille to be more involved and take the pressure off of Jess (Morse) and get a little more offense."

In addition to moving Boone to the right side (Outside hitter) and bringing setter Janderi Ceja up front to compliment Morse, it seemed to bring a spark.

"We decided that "J" (Janderi) is a really consistent player and was a hitter all through high school and we knew she could swing," Carey-Oliver said. "I thought it worked and she responded."

Ceja (5 digs), who leads the team in assists with 274, led the team with 22 in the match, but her three kills were excitable to the sophomore.

"It's been two years ago (senior year at Los Altos)," Ceja said. "It's been good to have the energy now and win more.

"I was actually an outside (hitter) first in my freshman year, but (Coach Carey-Oliver) put me as a setter (last season). But we just tried something new (Wednesday) and it worked."

In the opening game, Boone had seven of her 11 kills, which added to the amazing .450 kill percentage in the set. With Mt. SAC holding a four-point, 15-11 lead, Boone connected for three consecutive kills in a row to stretch the lead to seven points, 18-11. That propelled the Mounties to the first-set victory.

With the, 12-5 start in set two, it propelled the Mounties to the nine-point, 25-16 win and a 2-0 lead.

The third and final set was an early back-and-forth contest, with the Mounties holding down a one-point, 10-9 lead. But, seven consecutive winners by the Mounties, which included four kills by Morse and two service aces by Aya Al-Juraishi (6 aces in the match), put the match away with the eventual, 25-16 win.

"It feels great to get a win, because I know we started out kind of rocky (this season)," Mt. SAC libero Ashly Velazquez said. "I feel like now that the girls are very connected and our energy is there and our goal is just to win."

Velazquez led the team with six digs in the match and Macy Barnes added seven kills.
