Mt. SAC Volleyball Falls to Grossmont 3-1 in Season Opener

(El Cajon, CA) The Mt. SAC Volleyball Team took to the road and fell 3-1 in a non conference match on Wednesday Aug. 29 by scores of 25-18, 19-25, 22-25, 18-25.

After taking the opening game, the Mounties lost the three remaining games for the loss.

Sophomore outside hitter Alysha Tullar led the team with nine kills. Tullar was followed closely by middle blockers Shaianne Palos (9K), Lindsey Lane (7K) and opposite Kierra Coatney (6K, 12 digs).

Coatney and sophomore setter Brianda Valdez each had 11 assists for the Mounties, while defensive specialist Malia Carr led with 15 digs and freshman outside hitter Macy Barnes added 10 digs along with two kills.

In the first game, with the Mounties trailing, 4-5, they reeled off three consecutive points to take a 7-5 lead and never trailed again. A pair of kills by freshman middle blocker Ashlyn Stoddard in two of the three points helped the Mounties.

Later in the game the Mounties took a 20-16 lead on a kill by Tullar and outscored Grossmont 5-2 to win 25-18 on a kill by Palos from an assist by Valdez to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

In game two the Mounties took an early 4-1 lead but were outscored by the Griffins 12-2 to trail 13-6. However, Mt. SAC pulled to within four points, 19-15 on a kill by Lane. The Mounties stayed close the rest of the way but fell 25-19 to fall into a 1-1 tie in the match.

The third game saw a tight contest with Mt. SAC never trailing by more than four points and closed to within 20-21 on an attack error by Grossmont. The Griffins outscored the Mounties 4-2 and took game three 25-22.

Mt. SAC lost the fourth game 25-18 and fell 3-1 in the match.

The Mounties return for their home opener on Wednesday September 5 at 6:00 pm as they host Glendale College.
