(Walnut, CA) With conference play just around the corner, the Mt. SAC Women's Volleyball team is on a roll, winning four out of the last five matches. In the four wins the Mounties dropped only one game while winning 12.

On Saturday the Mounties hosted six teams in the First Annual Mt. SAC Volleyball Invitational.

The Mounties won the first two matches, 3-1 over Imperial Valley and 3-0 over Glendale. They dropped the final match of the day to College of the Canyons, 3-1.

Jordon Wilson, a sophomore middle blocker, had 16 of the teams' 29 kills in the loss to Canyons. The Mounties fell in four games, 19-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-17.

"The girls played well and Jordon was exceptional against Canyons," Mt. SAC Volleyball coach Ali-Carey Oliver said. "She was virtually unstoppable and is really coming into her own as a leader of this young squad.

In the first two games the Mounties never trailed in games as they defeated Imperial Valley, 25-17, 22-25, 25-13, 25-16 and swept Glendale, 25-14, 25-18, 25-20.

Brianda Valdez, a freshman setter, had 40 assists and 23 digs in the three matches.

"Brianda played great defense all day and distributed the ball well," Carey-Oliver said.

Also playing well for the Mounties was freshman outside hitter Saipeti Fuiava and freshman defensive specialist Malia Carr.

Fuiava had 31 assists, 18 digs and six service aces in the three matches, while Carr totaled 31 digs and had 9 service aces.

"Saipeti dished out the ball well and served very aggressively and Malia was amazing too," Carey-Oliver said.

The Mounties, who were the 2016 undefeated South Coast Conference North champions, will begin conference play this Wednesday, October 4 at East Los Angeles.
