Men win 6-0; Women Tie 1-1 over Chaffey College in Conference Action

(RANCHO CUCAMONGA) The Mt. SAC men's and women's soccer team continued South Coast Conference action on Tuesday at Chaffey College with a victory and a tie respectively.

The men, behind a pair of goals from sophomores Manuel Medina and Axle Mendez shut out Chaffey, 6-0. Goaltender Edwyn Gutierrez recorded his third shutout of the season.

With the victory, the men (8-1, 2-0) remain number one in the CCCAA State rankings

The women (3-4-1, 1-0-1) were led by a goal from sophomore forward India Hines, while Goalkeeper Britain Chaputa stopped 11 of 12 Chaffey shots in the game.

The men were led by Medina's two first-half goals at the 6th and 17th minute mark, followed by a goal from sophomore midfielder Edzon Cuevas in the 24th minute for the 3-0 halftime advantage.

Mendez' two unassisted goals in the second half were at the 68th and 71st minute.

Sophomore forward Michael Flores, who was All SCC first team last year, added the sixth and final Mounties goal at the 74th minute of the game.

Gutierrez stopped five shots on five attempts by Chaffey and Mt. SAC won its seventh game in a row.

"Mt. SAC had a well-rounded game offensively and defensively," Mt. SAC coach Juan Sanchez said.

In the women's game, Chaffey took a 1-0 lead in the 39th minutes of the first half. Mt. SAC responded six minutes later (45th minute) with the tying goal in extra time by Hines, assisted by sophomore forwards Mia Trugerro and Arye Looney.

The Mounties Took nine shots in the game, which was a defensive battle by both teams.

The next games will be this Friday at the Mt. SAC Soccer complex, with the women playing at 4:00 pm and the men at 6:00 pm.
