Mounties win CCCAA So Cal Wrestling Dual Championship; Dethrone four-time champ Cerritos

(Cerritos, CA) For the first time in six years, a new CCCAA So Cal Dual Champion is crowned – The current CCCAA No. 1 team in the state of California, Mt. SAC.

With a score of 30-13, Mt. SAC dethroned the four-time defending So Cal Champion Cerritos Falcons Saturday, October 16 at Cerritos College. Cerritos is currently ranked second in the state.

Mt. SAC defeated Rio Hondo, 44-3, in the semifinals to advance to the championship against Cerritos. Cerritos defeated Bakersfield in the other semi.

No. 7 Rio Hondo went on to defeat No. 3 Bakersfield, 29-23, for third place.

Consolation scores were: Santa Ana 29, Palomar 22, Bakersfield 36, East L.A. 9 and Rio Hondo 34, Santa Ana 18.

Mt. SAC, as a team, received a first-round bye, but wrestlers from five different colleges wrestled in exhibition matches.

Mt. SAC, who won its fifth So Cal title, will take on No. 3 Fresno City College on November 21 for the CCCAA State Dual Championship

FCC, which won the NorCal title for the seventh consecutive year, is the current three-time defending state champ.

Leading the way for the Mounties was four wrestlers with two wins on the day – Wetzell Hill, 174 and 184 Wt. Class (2 Technical Falls), Thomas Chapman, 149 Lbs. (Dec, Pin), Nate Kendricks, 197 Lbs. (Maj. Dec., Pin) and David Saenz, 133 Lbs. (Pin, For. Win).

Other winners for the Mounties were: Isiah Vazquez (174), Christopher Betancourt (125), Billy Looney (149), Jerry Rubio (165), Benjamin Garza (184), Jesse Garcia (285), and Conner Diamond (125).

The Mounties, who have finished second to Cerritos in 2016-17 and third the next two years in 2018-19, came out on top for the first time since the 2015 season.

The 2015 season saw the Mounties win it all – CCCAA So Cal and State Dual Champions.  They also won the state duals in 2013.

No competition was held in 2020 due to the pandemic.
