Mounties Sweep Season-Opening Mt. SAC Wrestling Duals; Defeat Cerritos, East L.A., Palomar & West Hills

(Walnut, CA) The 2017 Mt. SAC Wrestling season opened in perfect order as the Mounties swept all four of their opponents in the annual Mt. SAC Wrestling Duals Saturday afternoon.

Seven teams competed in the all-day event in the Mountie Gymnasium with Mt. SAC defeating Cerritos (22-17), East L.A. (56-0), Palomar (36-3) and West Hills (26-15).

Three teams finished with two wins and one loss – Cerritos, Rio Hondo and West Hills.

Mt. SAC had four wrestlers with at least three wins and no losses on the day.

Sophomore Hector Vargas (184 lbs.) led all wrestlers on the Mounties roster with a perfect 4-0 day, two wins by way of falls and two by decision.

Three wrestlers were 3-0 on the day for the Mounties – sophomore John Whisner (125 lbs.), 2 falls, and a decision; freshman Luis Melecio (197 lbs.), 2 major decisions; and freshman Demitrius Lopez (HWT), fall, major decision, forfeit.

At 174 lbs. freshman Matthew Mejia was 3-1 on the day, which included two major decisions and a win by forfeit.

Two wrestlers were a prefect 2-0 – 141 lbs., freshman Nathan Barragan and 149 lbs., freshman Manuel Salcedo. Both Barragan and Salcedo won by a decision and a pin.

Other wrestlers with wins by pin included: freshman Shawheen Ghalambor, 133 lbs., and by technical fall was freshman Hector Mora in the 157 wt. class.

Mt. SAC will travel to Lemoore this Saturday to compete in the West Hills Tournament at West Hills College. The Mounties placed third last year in the tournament.
