Walnut, Calif – As the 2025 women's golf season approaches, the defending state champion Mt. SAC Women's Golf Team is gearing up for another title run – this time with a fresh group of faces.
Head Coach Art Guevara returns for another season at the helm with high expectations following last year's historic victory – the program's first state championship title in 19 years. Leading the charge is the team's lone returner and captain, Kaitlyn Wang, whose leadership and experience are already proving invaluable as the Mounties prepare for their opener.
"Even though we have a new group, I don't see any deviation from last year's team to this year's team," said Guevara. "We've got five freshmen who have shown some wonderful potential, so Coach Chris and I are definitely looking forward to this season. I really think we have a more than competitive team that we are bringing up."
Practice has been steady at El Prado Golf Course and on the greens at Mt. SAC as the team works on refining their skills and developing chemistry. While the top three players have shown early consistency and strength, Guevara notes that the depth of the roster will be a critical factor in their success.
"It will come down to our fourth, fifth and sixth players," he explained. "Our top three are strong, but if the back half can contribute scores that are usable for us, I think we are one of the strongest teams in our conference."
The team's first real test will come on Sunday, August 24, at the season-opening invitational at The Lakes Country Club in Palm Desert. "I've heard that OCC has a competitive team this year," said Guevara. "We'll know more once we get out on the course and see how we stack up."
Beyond competition, Guevara is excited about the journey ahead with this new group of athletes. "We're coming off a fantastic year, and getting to know this group of ladies has been fun," he said. "I'm looking forward to seeing them play and achieve their goals. Everybody has been great and working on everything we've asked them to improve upon."
While the season's outcome remains to be seen, Guevara is already proud of the team's dedication. "I'm thankful to the ladies who put in the time and effort to try and lead us to another state championship this year. Without them, we wouldn't have a competitive team. I'm hoping they have a great and enjoyable year – and that they'll all be back for next season."
With strong leadership, promising talent and championship aspirations, the Mt. SAC Women's Golf Team is ready to tee off on what could be another historic season.
