Mt. SAC Women's Basketball moving on to Elite Eight

(Walnut, CA) Second-seed Mt. SAC (23-7) fought off a late rally by No. 7 Mt. San Jacinto (27-3) to earn a 48-40 win in a second-round game of the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Southern California Regionals at Mt. SAC (Saturday, March 7).

Aujane Mayes led the Mounties with a game-high 17 points, while teammate Mina Guevera-Goss was the team's second leading scorer with seven points. Allyah Cartajena grabbed seven rebounds to lead Mt. SAC.

The Mounties led by as many as 15 points in the third quarter, only to see the Eagles pull to within three with 3:46 left to play in the fourth. A key bucket by Guevera-Goss and free throws by Mayes and Hope Kakihara down the stretch sealed the win for Mt. SAC.

Turnovers played a big role in the game as Mt. San Jacinto committed 28 of them and the Mounties scored 22 points off of them.

The victory puts Mt. SAC in the 8-team CCCAA State Championships against the North #3 seed, Chabot. The single-elimination tournament begins on Thursday, March 12, at West Hills College in Lemoore.
