Mt. SAC Women’s Basketball Holds Off LBCC for 68-64 Victory

(Walnut, CA) Long Beach City College made a late charge, but the Mt. SAC Women's Basketball Team held off the Vikings for a, 68-64 South Coast Conference crossover win Friday night (Jan. 10).

With the victory, the Mounties won their fifth consecutive game and improved to 13-5 overall.

The Mounties were led by double-figure performances by guards Mina Guevera (2-5 3PM, 4-5 FTM, 5 RB, 2 Stls.) and Aujane Mayes (4-8 FTM, 7 RB, 6 Assts., 2 Stls.) with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

LBCC was led by Donavion Husky with a game-high 28 points.

The Mounties built up a 12-point lead (36-24) at the half. But the Vikings came roaring back with a 21-point third quarter to trail 49-45 heading into the final quarter.

Included in the comeback by the Vikings was a 16-4 scoring run in the third quarter.

With the game tied, 62-62, and :59 left in the fourth quarter, Mayes scored on a driving layup for the 64-62 lead. The Mounties sank four free throws, the last two by sophomore Remy Hare (1-3, 3PM, 2-2 FTM, 5 RB, 2 Stls., 9 Pts.) with 11 seconds left for the victory.

The Mounties also received scoring from freshman Ashton Hudson (3-4 FGM, 3-4 FTM, 3 RB) with nine points and sophomore forward Lauryn Manns (4 RB, 6 Stls.) had eight.

Mt. SAC will travel to El Camino College for a SCC crossover game Wednesday (Jan. 15).
