Mt. SAC opens Antelope Valley Holiday Tournament with 82-43 win over Barstow

(Lancaster, CA) Trailing 25-21 midway through the second quarter, Mt. SAC went on an 18-2 run to close out the first half and never looked back, rolling to an 82-43 opening-round win over Barstow (4-9) at the 18th annual Antelope Valley College Holiday Tournament.

Mt. SAC has won this tournament four straight years (2014-17).

Lauryn Manns led the Mounties (8-3) in scoring with 17 points, while teammates Tiana Douglas and Kiara Stiger added 15 and 14, respectively.

Each of Mt. SAC's starters scored in double figures. Jade Hughes tallied 12 points, while Aujanae Mayes and Natalia Shpegel added 10 points each.

Barstow's Anne Marie Hernandez led all scorers with 19 points.

As a team, Mt. SAC shot 53.8 percent from the field on 35-of-65 shooting and made 80 percent of their attempts from the free throw line (12-of-15). The Mounties also out-rebounded the Vikings, 37-25, behind Douglas' game-high nine boards. Shpegel and Hughes grabbed seven and six rebounds, respectively.

The Mounties continue their defense of this tournament's championship in a semifinal matchup against Moorepark on Saturday, Dec. 15, at 5 p.m.
