Mt. SAC Women’s Basketball Loses Two Close Games in Sequoias Tourney

(Visalia, CA) The final two games for the Mt. SAC Women's Basketball Team in the 42nd Annual Gilchrist Invitational Friday (11-30) and Saturday (12-1) ended in two-point losses to Sacramento City College, 56-54 and Chabot, 60-58.

The Mounties rallied in the fourth quarter in both games but fell short.

Sac City 56, Mt. SAC 54

Mt. SAC forward Lauryn Manns (5-8 FGM, 2-4 FTM, 5 RB, 4 Stls.) scored a team-high 12 points, while forward Jade Hughes (4-9 FGM, 2-3 FTM, 4 RB, 1 Asst., 5 Stls., 1 Blk.) and guard Aujanae Mayes (4-7 FGM, 2-3 FTM, 6 RB, 4 Asst., 3 Stls.) had 10 each.

Sac City held a slim 22-18 lead at the half, but the Mounties jumped into the lead heading into the final quarter, 36-35 after outscoring the Panthers by five, 18-13, in the third quarter. Hughes led the Mounties in the third with six points, two steals and a block.

With a big fourth quarter, Sacramento City built up a nine-point lead, 49-40 with 3:51 left, but the Mounties came all the way back with a late 14-7 run to trail, 56-54 with nine seconds left.

Tianna Burrell hit a 3-pointer and Hughes made a layup in a nine-second span, but a long-range shot by Burrell with three seconds left missed and the Mounties fell short on an opportunity to advance to the tourney semifinals.


Chabot 60, Mt. SAC 58

Mounties Natalia Shpegel (4-8 3 PM, 8-8 FTM, 5 RB) led the Mounties with 22 points and Jade Hughes (6-12 FGM, 9 RB, 1 Stl., 1 Blk.) added 12. Tiana Douglas (7 RB, 1 Stl.) had seven points, while Alexis Sanchez had six rebounds, three assists, three steals and three points.

It was a close first half with the Mounties trailing Chabot by two at the break, 28-26.

Hughes scored eight of her 12 points in the third quarter as the Mounties outscored Chabot, 23-17 and led by two, 49-47 heading into the final quarter.

Both teams went back and forth in the final quarter, but Chabot built up a five-point lead, 60-55 with 12 seconds left and Shpegel made a 3-pointer, but time ran out on Mt. SAC.
