(Walnut, CA) With the season winding down to the last week and first place in sight in the South Coast Conference North, the Mt. SAC Women's Basketball team defeated Pasadena City College 56-41 Friday night.
The Mounties (22-6, 6-2), who are one game behind L.A. Trade-Tech, move into the final week in conference with a shot to claim their 17th SCC title in a row.
After a home game on Wednesday against Rio Hondo, the conference title could be decided at Trade Tech on Friday. Mt. SAC defeated Trade-Tech in their first meeting, 78-70.
"I talk about three quarters of the season," said Mt. SAC Women's Basketball coach Brian Crichlow of where his team stands on the season.
"We're finishing up the second and getting ready for the third. As you move into that third tier of the season you want to be playing good basketball. You want to be playing great basketball at the end and getting ready for that post season run."
Three Mounties scored in double figures, led by Myjoi Adams (7 of 14 FGM, 4-6 FTM, 5 RB, 2 Blk.) with 18 points, followed by forward Jonnae Vermillion (7-12 FGM, 9 RB, 2 Stl., 4 Blk) with 14 and guard Dominique McLaughlin (6-15 FGM, 6 Asst., 2 Stl.) with 13 points.
Freshman guard Tiana Douglas had a team-high 11 rebounds for the Mounties.
Mt. SAC jumped out to a 16-9 first-quarter lead and extended it to 29-20 at the half. Vermillion was a perfect 3 for 3 from the field in the second quarter to lead the Mounties.
Mt. SAC blew the game open after intermission with a 21-point third quarter while PCC scored a handful (five) of points and the Mounties had doubled the lead to 50-25 entering the final period.
Adams led the team with eight points in the third quarter.
"The confidence is going up," said Adams, of the team. "I feel as a whole team when (my teammates) do good it makes you step up your game too. We just stick to the game plan "My teammates have been doing so well that they've opened up the court for me more. My coaches have put me in better positions to score."
