(Walnut, CA) Both Mountie Men's and Women's Basketball Programs captured 20+ point wins over their California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Southern California Second Round Play-Off Opponents and will host 3rd round (South Elite Eight) play-off action on Wednesday (03/04). The men (28-1, #1 seed) will take on conference rival, Long Beach City College (22-6, #8 seed) at 5:30 pm, and the women (31-0, #1 seed) will take on Cypress College (23-7, #8 seed) at 7:30 pm.
The Mountie Men played Long Beach earlier this season, defeating the Vikings, 78-70. The Vikings defeated #9 seed Chaffey College (20-12) to advance to the 3rd round. The Mountie Women faced Cypress early in the season (November 21), defeating them by a score of 81-57. The Chargers advanced to the third round by defeating #9 seed, Santa Monica College (18-11), by a whopping score of 103-75.
In second round action this past Saturday, after a close 32-30 score at the half, the Mountie Men turned up the scoring in the second half to easily defeat Rio Hondo College, 87-60. All-South Coast Conference First Team Selection, Stephaun Branch, led the team with 28 points. On the women's side, the Mounties led from the beginning and never looked back, defeating Riverside, 76-56. John'ea Thompson lead the team with 18 points, while Gina Henderson, coming off of the bench, scored 17 points.
