Compton, Calif. – After dropping their last two games to Cerritos (15-3) and Fullerton (8-7), the Mt. SAC Softball Team came back with a vengeance to take down Compton College 16-1 in five innings on Thursday, March 26. With the win, Mt. SAC improves to 22-4 overall and remains atop the South Coast Conference at 13-1. Compton falls to 6-20 overall and 1-12 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

It's no surprise that the game's top hitter, Mya Arias, got things going for the Mounties in the top of the second with a single up the middle that brought in Sophia Avina for the first run of the game. A double from Isabella Aspeitia and a single from Amanda Porterfield helped plate four more runs in the inning, giving Mt. SAC a quick 5-0 lead.

The Mounties kept applying pressure in the third. Arias picked up another hit, and Compton fielding errors allowed two more runs to score. A wild pitch soon after brought Arias home, extending the lead to 8-0.

Mt. SAC blew things wide open in the fourth inning. Natalie Valiente reached on an error that scored Arianna Ramirez, and singles from Marti Ann Leach and Hailey Montoya drove in three more. Sarai Raygoza capped the inning with a double to left center, pushing the Mounties' advantage to 13-0.

Compton managed to get on the board in the bottom of the fourth, as Sarah Aguilar delivered an RBI single to score Destiny Munguia and avoid the shutout.

But the Mounties had the final say. In the fifth, Karissa Blanco sparked another rally with a double that brought in Vanessa Tamayo. Arias stayed perfect at the plate with a two-bagger of her own to score Blanco, and Desiree Morales finished off the scoring with an RBI single that brought Arias home for the 16-1 final.

In the circle, Izel Avalos made her first start of the season and delivered three strong innings, allowing just one hit while striking out four with no walks. Karissa Blanco closed things out over the final two innings, adding three strikeouts to seal the run-rule win.
