Monterey Park, Calif. – When you're ranked No. 4 in California, you tend to make statements. On Tuesday, March 3, the Mt. SAC Women's Softball Team made a big one.
Pitcher Vanessa Hawks was untouchable, tossing an 8–0 no-hitter against East Los Angeles College as the Mounties wrapped things up early in five innings thanks to the run rule.
With the win, Mt. SAC improves to 15–2 overall and remains perfect in South Coast Conference play at 8–0. The Huskies drop to 9–5 overall and 2–5 in conference action.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Let's begin by giving credit where credit is due. Hawks faced just 17 batters across five innings, allowing zero hits, issuing three walks, and striking out three. Of her 67 pitches, 33 were strikes as she kept the Huskies guessing all afternoon.
Now moving onto offense. In the first inning, Amanda Porterfield doubled down the left field line to bring home Sarai Raygoza, and Marti Ann Leach followed with an RBI single to center to make it 2–0.
In the second inning, Raygoza added to the momentum with a single that brought home Desiree Morales. Sophia Avina kept it going in the third with an RBI single to score Emily Sandoval and extend the lead to 4–0.
The offense continued to roll in the fourth, with singles from Angelina Martinez and Sandoval adding two more runs. Raygoza sealed the win in the fifth inning, driving in Natalie Valiente for the eighth and final run to secure the run-rule victory.
