Mt. SAC Softball sweeps Cerritos in SCC doubleheader, 5-2, 7-2

(Walnut, CA) On Tuesday (April 11), Mt. SAC Softball won both games of a doubleheader against Cerritos, with scores of 5-2 and 7-2, extending their winning streak to nine games. As a result, the CCCAA State No. 5 Mounties now have a record of 26-5 overall and are in first place in the South Coast Conference with a 15-1 record.

Game No. 1
Mt. SAC 5, Cerritos 2

In the first game, the Mounties scored five runs in the first two innings and went on to win 5-2. Mia Mendoza hit a scoring fly ball in the first inning, while Janis Espinoza scored on a Falcons fielding error and Desiree Bravo singled in Ashley Diaz. In the second inning, Mendoza hit a two-run RBI double, scoring Espinoza and Katelyn Olson. Cerritos scored their only two runs in the third inning, and the Mounties were able to shut them down for the rest of the game. Eleyna Urbina pitched for the final four innings and only allowed four hits. Urbina won her 13th game of the season with seven strikeouts, and only two losses.

Game No. 2
Mt. SAC 7, Cerritos 2

In the second game, the Mounties took an early lead and went on to win 7-2. Kassandra Martinez hit a run-scoring double in the second inning, and Olivia Ortiz hit a two-run home run in the third inning, scoring Mendoza. In the fourth inning, Brianna Goris, Diaz, and Ortiz hit run-scoring singles. Cerritos scored two runs in the sixth inning, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Mounties' lead. Miranda Rodriguez pitched for 4-2 innings and did not allow any runs, while striking out three.

The Mounties will play two conference road games against L.A. Harbor on Thursday (April 13) and El Camino on Friday (April 15).
