Mt. SAC Softball defeats Rio Hondo, 5-1, in SCC game

(Walnut, CA) The Mounties continued their winning ways with a 5-1 win at home over visiting Rio Hondo on Friday (March 17) in a South Coast Conference game.

The Mounties, who are currently ranked No. 5 in the 3CFCA poll, were led by sophomore left fielder Mia Mendoza (2 for 3) with three RBIs. Also with two hits was sophomore catcher Celeste Cortez (2 for 2). Eight players hit safely for the Mounties. Sophomore first baseman Olivia Ortiz (1 for 2) also had two RBIs.

Freshman pitcher Alyssa Rubalcava (1 ER, 1 K) went 3.2 innings in the circle and picked up her fourth (4-1) win of the season.

Mendoza singled in the first inning, scoring second baseman Asia Chacon for the 1-0 lead, followed by a two-run single by Ortiz in the third inning, giving the Mounties a 3-0 lead.

Mendoza knocked in two more runs in the bottom of the fourth, scoring sophomore shortstop Katelyn Olson (1-3, R) and pinch runner Jenna Ruiz to lead, 5-1.

Mounties continue SCC action on the road against El Camino on Saturday, March 18.
