Mt. SAC Softball sweeps San Diego Mesa, 8-0 and 7-1

(Walnut, CA) For the third consecutive time this season, the Mt. SAC Softball team swept a doubleheader, with visiting San Diego Mesa losing, 8-0 (6 Inn.) and 7-1 on Saturday (April 23) in a non-conference game.

With the two wins, the Mounties, who remain No. 1 in the CCCAA State rankings, improved to 35-3 on the season.

Leading the way for the Mounties in the two games was first baseman Alyssa Castaneda (3-4, 3 RBIs, R) and designated player Brianna Goris (3-4, R, Dbl.). Left fielder Mikenna Barcelona was two 2 for 5 with two runs scored and a triple and an RBI.

Second baseman Asia Chacon was 3 for 4, scored two runs and had an RBI.

Grace Pieson (22-3) won the first game, going five innings, didn't allow a run and had six strikeouts.

Serena Navarrete picked up her ninth win without a loss in game two. She allowed a solo run and struck out one batter.

The first game saw the Mounties bang-out 11 hits, as Goris and Castaneda had two hits each.

Two runs in the first were followed by three runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth for the 7-0 lead.

Highlighting the first inning was Barcelona tripling, scoring Arely Coronado and coming home on a Mesa fielding error for the 2-0 lead.

Highlighting the fifth was a two-run home run by Ariana Coronado, scoring Olivia Ortiz.

Leading 1-0 in the second game, a four-run third inning included a two-run single to left field by Desiree Bravo, to give the Mounties a 5-0 lead.

They added two more runs in the sixth inning on a double by Goris, followed by consecutive singles by Barcelona, scoring Goris and a single to left by Chacon, which sent Barcelona to second. She advanced to third when Ariana Coronado reached on an error.

The big highlight of the inning was the first steal of home plate of the season by the Mounties, as Barcelona sprinted home with the seventh run of the game.

The Mounties will travel to East Los Angeles on Monday (April 25) at 3:00 pm to make up for the postponed game on April 7th. Tuesday (April 26) is the final regular-season game for the Mounties, as they will be honoring the sophomores against visiting Pasadena City College. The game time is 5:00 pm.
