Mt. SAC Softball: Mounties come-from-behind for 10-6 non-conference win over L.A. Mission

(Walnut, CA) An early 4-0 deficit didn't faze the Mt. SAC Softball team, as they continued their season-long winning streak with a come-from-behind, 10-6, win over visiting L.A. Mission on Tuesday (Feb. 22).

The Mounties, in the midst of a 10-0 start to the season, trailed the Eagles, 4-0, in the first inning and again, 6-4, in the third inning, put the game away with a five-run rally in the fourth.

After a rough start by Mountie starter, Gillian Molina, reliever Grace Pieson pitched the final 6 2/3 innings for the win.

Pieson, who picked up her seventh victory of the season, allowed two hits and two runs the remainder of the game, including 10 strikeouts.

"I just kept my composure and took my time and did as best as I could," said Pieson, on the cold and rainy night.

"This year, this team, we don't give up. That's a great mentality to have.

"We're just going to play Mt. SAC softball."

Leading the way for the Mounties was sophomore shortstop Ariana Coronado (2-4, R, Dbl., 3 RBIs) and freshman Brianna Goris (1-2, 2 R, 2 RBIs, Sac Fly). In the bottom of the first, Goris hit her third home run of the season. Goris is tied with Ariana Coronado with 10 RBIs.

Trailing 6-4 in the fourth inning, Coronado hit a two-run RBI double to tie the game, 6-6. The Eagles committed two errors in the inning, with five runs coming across for the eventual 9-6 Mt. SAC lead.

Sophomore Emily Barba scored the 10th run in the fifth after hitting a pop single to short right field, stole second, and came home on the third error of the game by L. A. Mission.

Mt. SAC continues South Coast Conference action on Thursday (Feb. 24) with a home game against Long Beach City College.
