Mountie Softball sweep Bakersfield, Sierra and San Mateo on opening weekend

(Bakersfield, CA) After nearly two years, normalcy seems to be back with CCCAA softball and opening weekend was a huge success for the Mt. SAC Softball team.

The Mounties defeated Bakersfield, 3-2, in nine innings, Sierra, 6-3, in eight innings and San Mateo (6-5) at Dean and Adah Gay Sports Complex at Bakersfield College.

Leading the way for the Mounties in the three games was freshman first baseman Brianna Goris (3 Dbls, Tpl., 2 RBIs) with seven hits in nine at-bats (.778 Avg.). Sophomore shortstop Ariana Coronado (3 Dbls., 4 R) collected six hits in 12 at-bats (.500).

As a team, the Mounties banged out 25 hits.

Mt. SAC opens up South Coast Conference action (Thursday, Feb. 3) at Cerritos. The game time is 3:00 pm.

The home opener for the Mounties will be Thursday, Feb. 15, as they host L.A. Harbor. The game time is 3:00 pm

Mt. SAC 3, Bakersfield 2 (9 Inn.)

After Bakersfield took a 2-0 lead in the second inning, the Mounties scored one in the top of the third and seventh to tie the game, 2-2. Two innings later they scored the go-ahead run for the 3-2 win in extra innings.

Goris and Ariana Coronado led the team with four and three hits, respectively and two doubles each. Goris also had a triple, while sophomore catcher Mireya Amezcua added a double, and freshman second baseman added two hits.

Sophomore Grace Pieson pitched the final five innings, allowing only one hit and striking out seven to pick up the win.

Mt. SAC 6, Sierra 3 (8 Inn.)

Goris (2 for 3, RBI, SB) and Ariana Coronado (2 for 4, R) led the team in hitting again with two hits each.

With the score tied, 3-3, in the eighth inning, the Mounties scored three innings in the top of the eighth inning.

Sophomore pitcher Gillian Molina went the final four innings and picked up her first win.

Mt. SAC 6, San Mateo 5

Sophomore left fielder Mikenna Barcelona (2 for 3, 2 RBIs) led with two hits in the game, while Ariana Coronado, Goris and sophomore center fielder Ashley Diaz (1 for 2, 2 RBIs, 2 R) each had a double.

After San Mateo took a first-inning, 3-0 lead, the Mounties scored four runs in the bottom of the inning for the 4-3 lead.

Highlighting the inning was a two-run RBI double by Diaz, scoring designated player Kassandra Martinez and Goris to tie San Mateo, 3-3.

Diaz eventually scored to take the 4-3 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, a single to left field by Barcelona scored Diaz for the 6-5 lead.
