(Walnut, CA) On a day when the sophomores were saluted after the game, the Mt. SAC Softball Team came through with a win over Chaffey College, 6-5 to finish off the South Coast Conference North schedule.

With the win the CCCAA State No. 5 Mounties improved to 33-6 overall and 10-2 in conference.

Briana Wheeler picked up her 19th win in relief of sophomore Jessica Olvera. Mt. SAC banged out 13 hits, including home runs by Michelle Banales and Vicky Guitierrez, the latter of which was a two-run shot in the sixth inning to break a 4-4 tie.

Banales, one of the seven sophomores to be saluted after the game, led the Mounties with three hits, an RBI, a double and a run scored.

Three other Mounties collected two hits each – freshman center fielder Caitlyn Felina (2 for 3, R, RBI), freshman Ciara Granado (2 for 4, RBI) and sophomore second baseman Nikki Soto (2 for 2, R, Sac, SB). Sophomore Sasha Allen started in left field and was 1 for 2 in the game.

The Mounties, who wrapped up the South Coast Conference North title last week, took a 3-0 lead only to see Chaffey eventually tie the game at 4-4 in the top of the fifth inning.

Gutierrez sent the ball over the center field fence in the bottom half of the inning and they never trailed again.

The Mounties will host College of the Canyons to wrap up the regular season on Wednesday before the playoff schedule is announced next week.
