Mt. SAC late-inning comeback downs RCC, 10-7

(Walnut) – By John M. Sherrard - In the biggest come-from-behind win of the season, the Mt. SAC softball team came from five runs down late in the game and defeated host Riverside City College, 10-7, Saturday afternoon at Brown Field in a nonconference game.

Trailing 7-2, the Mounties scored runs in the last three innings, including five in the fifth, to pull out the victory.

Mt. SAC, ranked sixth in the state, upped its record to 26-4 overall. RCC Falls to 13-17.

Leading the way for the Mounties was freshman right fielder Alyssa Rasso (Corona HS) going 3 for 4, scoring three runs and had two RBIs. Three players had two hits each for Mt. SAC; sophomore left fielder Danielle Jeffress (2 for 4, dbl, 2 runs, 2 RBIs), freshman shortstop Kayla Sok (2 for 3, trpl, 2 runs) and freshman catcher Jazmin Orozco (2 for 2, dbl, run).

Freshman pitcher Racqual Espinoza (Golden Valley HS) picked up her seventh win, going the last 3 2/3 innings, allowing only one run.

Sok and Rasso scored in the first inning for the 2-0 lead, but the Tigers scored seven runs in the next three innings for the 7-2 lead.

In the fifth, Rasso scored on an error by the RCC catcher and Jeffress came in on a wild pitch to close the gap, 7-4.

Five more runs came across the plate the next inning, highlighted by a two-run single by Rasso, scoring Jeffress and Sok. A pair of doubles by Jeffress and freshman first baseman Victoria Ayala (La Serna HS) added two more runs, to lead, 9-7.

A solo home run in the seventh inning by sophomore second baseman Allegra Cisneros (South Hills HS) completed the scoring for the Mounties, who had 15 hits in the game.

Mt. SAC will play four more games this week, highlighted by a game with second-place SCC team Cerritos College and two games at Bakersfield on Friday.
