Mt. SAC Men’s Track & Field Dominates at SCC Championships; Wins Fifth Straight Title

(Torrance, CA) A Dominating performance by the Mt. SAC Men's Track & Field Team, culminated with its fifth consecutive South Coast Conference championship and 19th in last 21 years at El Camino College on Friday April 27.

Mt. SAC (422 points), with great depth in most of the events, outdistanced second-place Cerritos (133) by almost 300 points, followed by host El Camino with 126.

The Mounties took home first place in seven of the 12 running events and won five of the eight field events and the grueling 10-event decathlon.

The top runner of the day with two championships was Manuel Fernandez in the 5,000 meter (15:12.87) and 10,000 meter (32:01.53) runs. Fernandez was also the 2017 CCCAA State Cross Country champion. Four Mounties, placing second through fifth followed Fernandez in the 5,000 and four of the first six places finished in the top 10 in the 10,000.

The first two sprints of the day, the 100 and the 200, saw the first five and first four respectively cross the line for Mt. SAC.

Daniel Stokes won the 100 (10.67) and Gaston Bouchereau placed first in the 200 (21.51). Both were also members of the 4 X 100 first-place relay team. The other two runners were Deondre Spruill and Kendall Turner, Jr.

Two other winners for the Mounties in the running events were Dylan Atencio in the 400 Hurdles (52.03) and Trelani Waters in the Steeplechase (9:29.71). Three of the first four finishers in the 400 were Mounties as well as six of seven in the steeplechase.

Timothy Sloan and Brandon McLaurin won the high jump (1.95 m) and triple jump (14.09 m), respectively, while David Potts, shot put (14.80 m), Shonnardo Bodie, Discus (49.57) and Hector Sanchez, Javelin (56.30 m) gained conference titles for the Mounties.

Kyle Beck won the decathlon with 5,868 points.

Next up for the team will be the preliminaries for the CCCAA Southern California Championships on Saturday May 5 at San Diego Mesa College, followed a week later with the finals also at Mesa.
