The Mt. SAC Men's Soccer Team beat Yavapai College 2-1 on Thursday, August 29.
The Mounties got their first goal in the 43rd minute when defender Brody Quinzon delivered a perfect pass over Yavapai's defense to forward Jon Jay Joseph. Joseph skillfully maneuvered past the last line of defense and scored, giving the Mounties a 1-0 lead.
Mt. SAC carried their momentum into the second half with another goal in the 56th minute. Midfielder Joseph Prado crossed the ball to forward Kenneth Flores who then chipped it over to forward Moises Prado. Prado displayed composure under pressure, striking a half volley into the lower left corner of the goal to make it 2-0.
Although the Mounties had several additional opportunities to further increase their lead, they were unable to capitalize. The momentum slightly shifted as Yavapai enhanced their attack in the final half of the match. In the 85th minute, an own goal was scored in favor of Yavapai with a misdirected header that got past goalkeeper Alex Ledesma, reducing the lead to 2-1. Despite the late pressure from Yavapai, Mt. SAC was able to secure the win.
The Mounties accumulated five shots on goal while Yavapai had two. Ledesma had one save.
"We were able to get a positive result against a quality opponent in Yavapai College, who fought for 90 minutes," Coach Sanchez said. "Our team was able to manage the game, although we made some mistakes towards the end. We will learn, grow and prepare for the next opponent."
