Mt. SAC Men's Soccer secures spot in SCC title game with semifinal win over Rio Hondo

(Walnut, CA) Host Mt. San Antonio College (14-5-1, 6-3-1) scored a 4-1 win over Rio Hondo College (11-8-3, 5-4-1) in the semifinal round of the South Coast Conference Tournament on Wednesday, November 9th. The game was initially scheduled for Tuesday but was postponed due to inclement weather.

Alex Mendez put the Mounties on the board first with a goal in the 24th minute on an assist from Andrew Vazquez. Jacob Cervantes scored another on an assist by Edward Castro in the 27th minute. Castro added a goal of his own on an assist from Emiliano Gutierrez in the 30th minute to put the hosts up 3-0 at halftime. Frank Gonzalez scored Mt. SAC's final goal of the day on an assist from Vazquez in the 86th minute. The Roadrunners' only score came a minute later.

Goalie Jacob Cardenas played all 90 minutes in goal for the Mounties, making four saves.

In a matchup of conference division winners, Mt. SAC will face Cerritos College (18-0-2, 10-0) for the SCC crown on Friday, Nov. 11, at El Camino College at 7 p.m. The Falcons are ranked No. 1 in the most recent California Community College Sports Information Association poll and the Mounties are ranked No. 5. Cerritos defeated Mt. SAC, 2-1, in an SCC crossover game on Oct. 11.
