Mountie Men's Soccer opens SCC play by defeating Rio Hondo

(Walnut, CA) Host Mt. San Antonio College (9-2, 1-0) opened its South Coast Conference schedule with a 2-1 North Division win against Rio Hondo College (5-5-2, 0-1) on Tuesday, Oct. 4.

Following a scoreless first half, Damian Esparza scored the game's first goal in the 60th minute on an assist from Edward Castro to put the Mounties up, 1-0. The Roadrunners responded with a goal of their own in the 62nd minute to tie the score. Alex Mendez scored what proved to be the winning goal for Mt. SAC in the 75th minute on an assist from Castro.

Daniel Ramirez (one goal allowed) played all 90 minutes in goal for the Mounties.

Ranked No. 5 in the state in the most recent California Community College Sports Information Association poll, Mt. SAC will play at Compton College (3-4-2, 1-0) in an SCC crossover game on Friday, Oct. 7, at 4 p.m. The Tartars are coming off a 4-0 win over Los Angeles Harbor College (1-9, 0-1).
