Top seed Men's Soccer claims double-overtime win over No. 8 Santa Ana to advance to next round

(Walnut, CA) No. 8 seed Santa Ana (10-6-6) and No. 1 Mt. SAC (16-2-2) battled to a 2-2 tie through regulation play and an overtime period before the Mounties scored three goals in the second overtime period to seal the victory, 5-2. With the win, Mt. SAC advances to the third round of the California Community College Athletic Association Southern California Regionals.

The visiting Dons took a 1-0 lead into halftime, then the Mounties responded with an unassisted goal in the 63rd minute by Alex Mendez to tie the score. Santa Ana took the lead, 2-1, in the 75th minute before Mendez scored again in the 87th minute on an assist from Jason Garcia to tie the game, 2-2, forcing overtime.

Following a scoreless first overtime period, Garcia broke the deadlock on an assist from Edwin Cano in the 104th minute to put the hosts up, 3-2. Paul Iniguez added to the Mounties' lead with an unassisted score in the 107th minute, then Garcia added an insurance goal on an assist from Gabriel Arredondo in the 110th minute to hammer down the win for Mt. SAC.

The Mounties' goalkeeping duo of Jacob Cardenas (90 minutes) and Ryan Molina-Castillo (30 minutes) combined for five saves—three by Cardenas, two by Molina-Castillo.

Mt. SAC will host No. 4 seed Golden West (13-2-7) in the next round on Saturday, Nov. 27, at 2 p.m. to see who advances to the CCCAA State Championships, which begin on Friday, Dec. 3, at Mt. SAC.
