(Lompoc, CA) A season-opening third place finish (2nd place tie) by the Mt. SAC Men's Golf Team got 2020 underway at the Pt. Conception Invitational at the La Purisima Golf Course Sunday and Monday (Jan. 26 & 27).
The event, hosted by Santa Barbara City College, was the largest in tournament history with 20 teams entered.
The Mounties and Cypress College finished in a tie for second with identical 793 two-round scores, but the Chargers were awarded second per a sixth-man tie-breaker rule.
Cypress had the best team round on Monday with a 398 score. Mt. SAC was a stroke back with a 399. The Mounties shot a second-best 394 on day one of the tourney.
Reedley College led the field with a 781 for first place at the Par-72 course and Preston Gomersall was low medalist of the tourney with a 150 (71-79).
Mt. SAC was led by Blake Copeland with a 158 (76-82). Copeland, a sophomore, was tied for seventh after the first round and finished 16th overall out of 116 entrants.
Finishing behind Copeland for the Mounties was Felix Tsui (79-81) and Kotaro Noda (77-83) with a 160. One stroke back was freshman Ben Sanders (87-74). Sanders' 74 was the lowest round on day two.
Sophomore James Johnson (83-79) carded a 162, followed by Tommy Chung (79-87) with a 166.
Mt. SAC will play in the Orange Empire Classic, hosted by Cypress College, Monday (Feb. 3) at Candlewood Country Club in Whittier).
