Johnson, Gillette Shoot 73’s at Candlewood CC; Mt. SAC Golf Places Third

(Whittier, CA) The Mt. SAC Men's Golf Team, led by freshman James Johnson and sophomore David Gillette, helped the Mountie to a third-place finish in an Orange Empire Conference match Wednesday.

Johnson and Gillette both shot a 73 to lead the Mounties to a team score of 383 at Candlewood Golf Course in Whittier and maintained third place in the conference standings with five matches remaining.

Finishing with a 75 was sophomore Cole Albert with his best score in conference this season. 

"I'm proud of James and David and the whole team for a good round Wednesday," Mt. SAC Men's Golf coach Greg Osbourne said. "As a team we are on pace to qualify for Regionals, but have to keep this momentum going throughout the remainder of our conference schedule."

Six golfers shot 73's on the day out of 40 entrants in the six-team conference and only a one-under par 69 by medalist Scott Rafter of Cypress and another score of 72 bested Johnson and Gillette.

Cypress maintains a first-place lead with Orange Coast in second.

Johnson, from South Hills High School, is ninth overall with a 76.0 average, just three off the first-place leader with a 73 average.

"I just feel I'm going to have a good round," said Johnson, the day before while attending a Mt. SAC softball game.

In addition, he did with his best effort of the season along with Gillette who also had his top score in conference.

Mt. SAC, with the third-place standing in conference, are on pace to qualify as a team for the Southern California Regionals next month.

Mt. SAC will compete in OEC match #3 at the Tustin Ranch Golf Course on Monday in Irvine.
