Walnut, Calif. – It was a wild ride in the beginning, but the Mt. SAC Men's Basketball Team walked away with a 75-57 victory over Los Angeles City College on Wednesday, February 4. The win marked a milestone for Head Coach Michael Fenison, earning his 100th career victory with the Mounties, while also securing Mt. SAC's 20th win of the season. The Mounties completed the first round of conference play undefeated at 5-0 and improved to 20-3 overall. Los Angeles City fell to 3-20 on the season and 1-4 in conference action.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Jeremy Williams did his thing, putting the Mounties on the board with a three-pointer and Zion Booker followed it up with a powerful dunk to give them the lead. The Cubs responded quickly behind a three-pointer and jumper from Troy Agtang, to knot it up in the opening minutes.
Dayvon Gates led Mt. SAC in the first half with 10 points and four rebounds, while Williams added eight points and three boards. For L.A. City, Agtang and Brayden Fu paced the offense with seven points each. After multiple lead changes, the Cubs carried a narrow 29-27 advantage into halftime following a buzzer-beater from Agtang.
The second half opened with both teams trading baskets, keeping the crowd on the edge of their seats. L.A. City briefly gained momentum with three consecutive three-pointers from Leroy Perry and Fu, but the Mounties responded with a dunk from Ryan Wheeler, jumpers from Gates, and a layup by Booker to stay within reach.
Williams then delivered a key three-pointer to put Mt. SAC back in front for good. With 13 minutes remaining, Alejandro Munoz entered the game and provided an immediate spark, scoring 11 points in the second half, including three shots from beyond the arc.
Mt. SAC closed the game with strong rebounding and defensive pressure, as Gates and Omari Abdallah combined for 10 rebounds to help secure the 18-point victory.
